Malaysia may one day vote online, EC says trust and security top priorities

PETALING JAYA, Aug 14 — The Election Commission of Malaysia has not dismissed the idea of online or electronic voting in the future, according to EC chairman Datuk Seri Ramlan Harun. BH reported that Ramlan emphasized the proposal would necessitate comprehensive analysis, particularly concerning public trust and confidence in such a system.

He elaborated on the crucial elements that must be taken into account, such as cybersecurity, the integrity of the electoral process, ballot secrecy, infrastructure preparedness, and potential legislative changes. Ramlan mentioned that the EC is investigating the feasibility of implementing e-voting before it could be introduced in Malaysia.

Key areas under review include the experiences of other nations, advancements in technology, system security and integrity, and public readiness. Elections in Malaysia occur when either the Parliament or a state assembly is dissolved, whereas by-elections are held to fill unexpected vacancies. During polling day, registered voters cast their ballots at designated centers between 8am and 6pm in Peninsular Malaysia, while in Sabah and Sarawak, the voting hours are from 7.30am to 5.30pm.
