Landfill lunches? Sabah group asks Kota Kinabalu City Hall to clarify packed food claims

KOTA KINABALU, Aug 14 — The Sabah Environment Action Group (SEAG) has approached Kota Kinabalu City Hall (DBKK) for clarification regarding claims that food vendors are selling packed meals at the Kayu Madang landfill. This request came after a popular social media post went viral, prompting citizens to seek further information from SEAG. The Instagram post, shared through the account sabah.info, indicated that food vendors were offering packaged food at the landfill and invited potential customers to place orders.

SEAG expressed its hope that DBKK could provide a definitive answer on whether such activities were occurring at the municipal landfill, situated in the KKIP area. This landfill serves not only Kota Kinabalu but also neighboring municipalities such as Petagas, Putatan, Penampang, Tuaran and Kota Belud. From a public health standpoint, SEAG highlighted potential concerns surrounding hygiene conditions at landfill sites, which could pose challenges in identifying the source of any possible health issues should the claims be verified.

Therefore, the group emphasized the urgency of addressing the matter promptly to ensure the safety of food vendors, City Hall employees, and other individuals present at the site. SEAG intends to formally submit a letter to DBKK to investigate the claims and, in the event of verification, advocate for necessary measures and awareness programs focused on food safety and hygiene practices for all involved entities.
