KMRC targets Kenya’s housing finance gap as Affordable Housing Conference set for August 20

Nairobi, Kenya - The Kenya Mortgage Refinance Company (KMRC) is set to host the fifth Kenya Affordable Housing Conference from August 20 to 21 at Lake Naivasha Resort in Nakuru County. The conference aims to tackle the twin challenges of affordable housing shortages and lack of financing for Kenyans, particularly those with informal or irregular incomes.

KMRC CEO and Managing Director Johnstone Oltetia emphasized the need to address both the supply and demand gaps in the housing sector. The two-day event will bring together government officials, lenders, developers, investors, pension funds, SACCOs, and international experts to explore financing models that can expand access to homeownership.

Discussions will cover alternative financing methods, such as blended finance, development finance, and mortgage liquidity facilities. The conference will also delve into land administration reforms, title regularisation, and improved land governance to unlock housing development and attract investment. Sustainability, technology, and data on Kenya's residential property market will be key topics, with stakeholders examining climate-resilient housing, green buildings, resource efficiency, and the role of housing in creating sustainable cities.

Technology, including modern construction methods and artificial intelligence, is expected to play a significant role in lowering construction costs and improving efficiency. The conference will also feature experiences from Kenyan homeowners, providing insights into the practical barriers households face in acquiring homes and assessing whether current interventions meet citizens' needs.
