Incheon airport becomes world’s busiest international hub so far in 2026

Incheon International Airport has emerged as the world's busiest international hub for the first half of 2026, handling 38.39 million international passengers. This surpasses London Heathrow Airport, which served 37.79 million passengers in the same period, and Singapore’s Changi Airport, with 34.53 million passengers. The number of international travelers indicates an airport's global competitiveness.

Incheon's rise is due to a decrease in passengers at other major hubs such as Dubai and Heathrow, amid international uncertainty following the US' attacks on Iran. Incheon's international passenger traffic rose by 6.3% from the same period last year, reaching 36.12 million in the first half of 2027. Middle East war has led to an 18.1% surge in transfer passengers, with connections rising from 3.59 million to 4.24 million.

Incheon saw a 63.2% increase in connecting travelers going to Europe, totaling 214,000. Foreign nationals accounted for 44.4% of all passengers in the second quarter of 2026, a record high. The airport's infrastructure expansion and its extensive network of 101 airlines serving 183 cities across 53 countries contributed to its top rank.

Incheon has completed its Phase 4 construction program, allowing it to accommodate 106 million passengers annually, better than airports like Hong Kong International Airport and Shanghai Pudong International Airport. In 2026, Incheon welcomed new airlines like Virgin Atlantic, Thai Lion Air, and Sun PhuQuoc Airways. Delta Airlines made Incheon its Asian hub, replacing Narita International Airport.

The airport plans to enhance its competitiveness through AI-driven transformation and urban air mobility infrastructure development. Kim Beom-ho, the acting president of Incheon International Airport Corporation, thanked the government, people, and airport staff for their support and hard work, vowing to innovate services while maintaining core airport operations.
