Incheon airport becomes world’s busiest international hub so far in 2026

Incheon International Airport has become the world's busiest international hub for the first half of 2026, handling 38.39 million passengers. This marks a new record set by Airports Council International. The airport's ranking surpasses London Heathrow and Singapore's Changi, which came in second and third respectively with 37.79 million and 34.53 million passengers.

The increase in international passenger traffic is a testament to the airport's global competitiveness. This rise is largely attributed to a decrease in passenger numbers at other major hubs like Dubai and Heathrow due to geopolitical tensions in the Middle East following the US' military strikes on Iran. Incheon's international passenger traffic for the first half of 2027 grew by 6.3% compared to the same period in 2026, reaching 36.12 million passengers.

The surge in traffic is also due to an 18.1% increase in transfer passengers and a 63.2% boost in connections to Europe. The rise in international tourists, particularly from China and Japan, also played a significant role. Foreign nationals accounted for 44.4% of all passengers, breaking a record in the second quarter of 2026. The airport attributes its success to continued infrastructure expansion and a robust aviation network.

Incheon's Phase 4 construction program, completed in November 2024, placed it among the top three airports in terms of infrastructure, capable of handling 106 million passengers annually. The airport boasts a wider international network than its competitors, serving 158 cities compared to Hong Kong's 139, Shanghai Pudong's 92, and Narita's 86.

In 2026, Incheon welcomed new airlines such as Virgin Atlantic, Thai Lion Air, and Sun PhuQuoc Airways. Delta Airlines, previously using Narita as its Asian hub, now uses Incheon as its primary Asian hub. Looking forward, Incheon plans to enhance its competitiveness through AI-driven transformations and infrastructure for urban air mobility.

Kim Beom-ho, the acting president of Incheon International Airport Corporation, expressed gratitude to the government, public, and airport staff, promising to innovate services while remaining committed to the airport's core values.
