Gushegu MCE says slain Yiidana was targeted as police investigate killing of chief and son

The Municipal Chief Executive for Gushegu, Abdul Hafiz Adam, has stated that the killing of Yiidana and his son at the chief's palace was a targeted assassination, not the start of larger communal unrest. He has advised residents to stay calm as authorities investigate and identify those responsible. Three gunmen entered the palace around 11 p.m. on Tuesday, initially confronting young men outside before forcing their way into the chief's room and killing him and his son.

The chief's wife was able to identify some of the attackers and provided their names to the police, with additional names coming from other witnesses. The information has been forwarded to the security agencies for further investigation. The District Police Command has transported the bodies to Tamale for an autopsy. The Regional Police Commander has pledged a full-scale investigation into the killings and the motive behind them, while the Regional Minister has met with the bereaved family to urge restraint.

Authorities believe the chief was specifically targeted and are appealing for residents to remain calm to prevent further violence. The attack has caused fear among the community, with most people leaving Gushegu since the incident, leaving only members of the chief's family.
