Gauteng police nab four in hijacked car, seize guns and ammo

Gauteng police have successfully apprehended four individuals following a high-intensity operation in Pretoria, resulting in the seizure of three unlicensed firearms, ammunition, and other evidence. The suspects, aged between 22 and 26, were detained in Danville for possession of illicit weapons and a hijacked motor vehicle. Captain Tintswalo Sibeko, a police spokesperson, revealed that the operation involved several units, including the Saps Gauteng Highway Patrol, Tactical Response Team, Pretoria West Detectives, CAP Specialised Operations, and Tracker Connect.

These arrests are part of the broader effort to curb serious and violent crimes in Pretoria West, Laudium, and surrounding regions. During the search, law enforcement recovered three unlicensed firearms, ammunition, false registration plates, stained money, and cellphones, leading to the vehicle's seizure for further investigation.

The police are also probing the possibility that the suspects may have been involved in hijackings, kidnappings, and armed robberies in the Tshwane District, with ongoing investigations to confirm their potential involvement in other serious crimes. The suspects are set to face Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on Friday, 14 August 2026.

Separately, an attempted cash-in-transit robbery in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) ended in failure when suspects fled the scene after stealing personal belongings and firearms from guards. The incident occurred on the N2 highway near the M7 interchange in Durban on Wednesday night, 12 August 2026. Paramedics confirmed that the targeted vehicle was spared from an explosion, but the guards were robbed of some items and firearms.

Emergency services attended the scene, secured the area, and the freeway remained closed for several hours for further investigation.
