Of these, 1.03 million people, or 62.8%, paid long-term care insurance premiums. On the other hand, only 158,000 people, or 9.6%, received long-term care benefits. The long-term care insurance premium paid by foreigners was 325.6 billion won, while the benefits paid was 193.5 billion won. As a result, the surplus was 132.1 billion won. The NHIS analyzed that the long-term care insurance for foreigners showed a surplus because many highly insured foreigners, such as those working for companies, pay premiums but have a low probability of receiving long-term care benefits. The NHIS predicted that the surplus of long-term care insurance for foreigners would continue to increase as the number of insured foreigners increases. An official from the NHIS said, "The number of insured foreigners who pay premiums is expected to increase further as the number of foreigners who are mandatory subscribers to the national health insurance system increases." The official added, "We will prepare for the aging of the foreign population and make sure to use the surplus efficiently."
