Democratic senators Elizabeth Warren and Richard Blumenthal have sent a letter to the Antwerp World Diamond Centre (AWC) president and jeweler David Gotlib expressing concerns about the circumstances surrounding a diamond ring given to President Donald Trump in connection with the US's 250th anniversary. The exclusive ring, the size of a clock, was designed by Gotlib and consists of 321 diamonds set in 18-karat gold.

The senators argue that awarding the ring to Trump in what they deem as inappropriate behavior could reinforce the perception that foreign companies can "buy lucrative exemptions... by overstating gifts to President Trump." Antwerp has a centuries-long tradition as one of the world's major centers of the diamond trade, hosting 1,470 diamond companies according to the AWC.

AWC ambassador Bill White emphasized in a press release that the ring reflects both the craftsmanship Antwerp is known for and the special bond between their countries. President Trump thanked the diamond sector in Antwerp in a video message. Several weeks later, the European diamond industry was exempted from Trump's temporary 10% global tariff on diamonds, introduced following the US Supreme Court's ruling that the earlier tariffs were illegal.

The tariffs, announced on April 2, 2025, were set to last 150 days but have since been replaced by new tariffs under different legal grounds. The exemption is significant as the US accounts for more than 55% of global diamond consumption.
