German Farmers' Association fears partial total crop failure

Der Deutsche Bauernverband, representing German farmers, has warned of severe crop losses this year due to ongoing drought conditions. Bauernpräsident Joachim Rukwied spoke to the Redaktionenetzwerk Deutschland, predicting below-average harvests for cereals, especially wheat, and rapeseed. He also expressed concerns for autumn crops such as potatoes, vegetables, sugar beets, maize, and soybeans.

Rukwied suggested that southern parts of Germany might face total yield losses, while northern regions, which have experienced sporadic rainfall, could still maintain relatively acceptable stocks. However, he noted that below-average harvests are likely across the board, particularly in southern Germany. The farmers are demanding support from the government, as the persistent heat and drought are causing feed supplies to dwindle and forcing some livestock farmers to cull animals prematurely.
