From Niseko to Eunos: How a snowboarding trip inspired this Singapore home

In 2016, Joshua Choo and Marilyn Lim visited Suiboku in Niseko, Japan, where they were captivated by the loft's raw textures, industrial aesthetic, and understated design. The couple, both in their thirties and working in the shipping industry, were particularly drawn to the winter coziness of the space. This experience influenced the design of their Eunos apartment, which they now call their second home.

The four-bedroom apartment, located close to family, is the result of collaboration between the couple and interior designer Sherman Chua. Chua, a friend from their school and national service days, interpreted the Brutalist architectural style through softer, more intimate elements. He incorporated rounded cabinet handles, curved edges, and sculptural furniture to complement the Brutalist inspiration.

One notable feature is the floating cabinet in the entrance foyer, which curves gently and extends into the living room. This cabinet houses a minibar, shoe cabinet, and sitting area for footwear. The wall behind it curves towards the balcony doors, creating a cohesive architectural language throughout the home. The floating cabinet is primarily dark timber veneer, with an off-white section framing a Samsung The Frame television displaying artwork in Art Mode.

The reconfigured layout of the apartment emphasizes conversation over television viewing. The open living area allows guests to move easily between the minibar, dining area, kitchen, and living room. The lounge-like layout includes an organically shaped custom sofa, amoeba-like coffee tables, and a round black dining table with bulbous legs, contributing to the relaxed and inviting atmosphere.
