From Niseko to Eunos: How a snowboarding trip inspired this Singapore home

Joshua Choo and Marilyn Lim, a Singaporean couple in their 30s who work in shipping, were inspired by their snowboarding trip to Niseko, Japan. They stayed at Suiboku, a collection of lofts known for its industrial aesthetic paired with Japanese design elements. The stark contrast between the raw textures and modern luxury left a lasting impression on the couple.

When designing their four-bedroom apartment in Eunos, they aimed to recreate the warmth, comfort, and understated luxury of their Suiboku stay. Their previous one-bedroom unit was too small, and with plans to have a family, they needed a larger space closer to their families. Interior designer Sherman Chua, a long-time friend of Joshua, was engaged to bring their vision to life.

Chua incorporated Brutalist architecture principles into the design, softening the raw materiality through rounded edges, sculptural furniture, and a continuous thread of rounded elements throughout the home. One notable feature is the floating cabinet in the entrance foyer, which curves gently like a paper scroll and transitions to a wall that echoes the gesture.

Displayed along the cabinet are small pots, objets d'art, and the couple's dog sculpture. Another key element is the record player, reflecting Joshua's love for vinyl. The layout was also reconfigured to create a more inviting atmosphere, with conversation taking center stage rather than the television. The lounge-like living area features an organically shaped custom sofa, amoeba-like coffee tables, and a round black dining table with bulbous legs.
