Doosan Wins TerraPower SMR Equipment Contract

Doosan Enerbility has secured a significant contract to manufacture core equipment for a sodium-cooled fast reactor with TerraPower, an advanced nuclear technology firm based in the United States. The agreement, signed on August 14, will see Doosan Enerbility produce and deliver key components, including the reactor containment vessel, support structure, and internal structures, which are crucial for the safe and efficient operation of the small modular reactor (SMR).

This contract marks the culmination of years of collaboration, following a manufacturability review contract signed in December 2024. The successful development and implementation of design enhancements by Doosan Enerbility played a pivotal role in securing the deal. The SMR will be installed in a 345MW advanced nuclear power plant under construction in Kemmerer, Wyoming, United States.

This project is poised to be one of the first next-generation nuclear power projects to transition into commercial-scale construction within the United States.

The US government's policy support, coupled with a construction permit from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), paved the way for the project's commencement in the spring of 2026. TerraPower's reactor design is a Sodium-cooled Fast Reactor (SFR) that utilizes liquid sodium as a coolant, setting it apart as a fourth-generation reactor technology. This innovative approach allows the reactor to generate up to 500MW of power when paired with a molten salt energy storage system.

Kim Jong-doo, the head of Doosan Enerbility's Nuclear Business Group, emphasized the significance of the contract, crediting the trust established with TerraPower. He further stated, "We will execute the project without any setbacks, thus expanding our role in the global supply chain."
