The results showed distinct activity patterns in the dogs' brains that differentiated sad faces from fearful ones, and angry faces from fearful ones. However, there was no evidence that the dogs could distinguish angry faces from sad ones. Fearful expressions were found to stand out from other negative emotions.
Senior author Laura Cuaya emphasized the importance of understanding dogs as emotional beings who have evolved to recognize human expressions and cooperate with us. This study is the first to provide direct evidence that dogs' brains can distinguish between two human faces displaying different negative expressions. The researchers caution that dogs outside loving family environments may respond to human emotional cues differently.
