Canadian companies betting Trump will buckle ahead of 50% tariff deadline

Canadian companies are banking on President Donald Trump to call off 50% tariffs set to go into effect on August 19. Unifor, Canada’s largest private sector union, has warned against concessions to the U.S., citing the US reliance on Canadian resources such as energy, potash, and aluminum. Canada has been negotiating with the US since 2023, with negotiations taking place every few weeks.

If an agreement isn’t reached by Wednesday, Canada will retaliate "hard" against the unjustified tariffs. Trump announced new tariffs on Canadian goods in response to what he calls "discriminatory" measures, including provincial boycotts on American alcohol and quotas on American dairy imports. The Canadian delegation is seeking a "conciliatory approach" in trade talks, but the U.S. will retaliate against any trade action.

Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne remains confident in the Canadian economy’s ability to handle the trade uncertainty, stating that Canadians are resilient. Canada-U.S. Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc has been meeting with U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer to negotiate a deal, with LeBlanc confirming that the talks are ongoing and advancing Canada’s interests.
