Asokore Mampong Municipal Assembly demolishes agency of Sekyedumase Community Bank for 24-Hour Market

The Asokore Mampong Municipal Assembly in Ghana's Ashanti region demolished structures, including a branch of the Sekyedumase Community Bank, to build its version of the government's 24-Hour Market at Aboabo. The bank had no option but to surrender its premises, losing millions of Ghana Cedis and assets. The bank has a backup plan to safeguard its data and inventory, but lost millions in cash and assets due to the demolition.

The Assembly designated the Aboabo location for the 24-Hour Market, despite the area being densely populated with private homes, artisans, petty traders, and the bank's branch. The bank had requested incorporation into the project design or additional time to find an alternative location, consulting with the Bank of Ghana and ARB Apex Bank.

The bank sought an injunction to halt the demolition but was denied. The Municipal Chief Executive declined to comment, stating that the Assembly would react soon. Some Aboabo community members informed GBC that occupants were given multiple extensions before the demolition took place.
