Afghan soil being used against Pakistan, Naqvi tells Norway FM as two discuss counterterrorism cooperation

On Friday, Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi met with Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide to discuss counterterrorism cooperation, with a focus on the use of Afghan soil in terror attacks targeting Pakistan. Eide's visit marked the first by a Norwegian foreign minister in a decade, as he arrived a day prior on a two-day trip to Pakistan. During their discussions, both leaders aimed to enhance bilateral relations and address regional matters.

Naqvi and Eide agreed to bolster counterterrorism efforts, prevent illegal immigration, train police, and cooperate legally. They also examined the situation in neighboring Afghanistan and the activities of banned organizations operating from that country. Eide praised Pakistan's "constructive and active" role in the US-Iran conflict.

The two nations also spoke about steps taken against illegal immigration to Europe from Pakistan, noting a 47% decline in such immigration due to Pakistan's effective measures. Pakistan's zero-tolerance policy against illegal immigration was also acknowledged by the European Union, with Naqvi emphasizing the importance of legal immigration for curbing illegal crossings.

Naqvi informed Eide that Afghan soil continues to be utilized for terrorism in Pakistan, and Pakistan stands as a barrier between the world and terrorist elements. He stressed the necessity for collective action to eradicate terrorism. Eide appreciated the active involvement of the Pakistani diaspora in Norway, highlighting their contributions across various sectors.

During the meeting, Naqvi emphasized that his visit would be a significant milestone in strengthening bilateral relations between Norway and Pakistan. The discussion also included senior officials from both countries, including State Minister Talal Chaudhry.
