A Plus rejects five-year presidential, parliamentary terms, vows to campaign against proposal

Gomoa Central's MP, Kwame Asare Obeng, known as A Plus, has opposed a proposal to lengthen the presidential and parliamentary terms from four to five years. He pledged to oppose the plan and actively campaign against it if it is put to a vote in Ghana. While recognizing the efforts of the Constitutional Review Commission, A Plus disagreed with their suggestion to extend the terms.

He advocated for shorter political cycles, between two and three years, with the removal of presidential term limits. He argued that more frequent elections would create a greater incentive for elected leaders to perform well, as their continued service would hinge on their achievements. Under the present two-term arrangement, leaders might become less motivated during their final term since they no longer need to secure re-election.

A Plus cited President John Mahama as an example, suggesting that he could have accomplished more if he had been able to seek another term. He believed that periodic elections would force politicians to demonstrate their accomplishments rather than remaining in office merely due to constitutional guarantees. A Plus, who has served as MP for less than two years, claimed that he had already undertaken numerous initiatives in Gomoa Central, even without a personal budget.

He urged Ghanaians to evaluate their elected officials based on their accomplishments rather than the duration of their tenure, emphasizing that political accountability should be the foundation of any constitutional changes.
