A Plus rejects claims poor English keeps him silent in Parliament

Gomoa Central MP Kwame Asare Obeng, widely known as A Plus, has dismissed allegations that his scarce participation in Parliament is due to his limited English proficiency. The individual with a background in music turned politics, emphasized that he places greater emphasis on achieving tangible outcomes for his constituents rather than gaining frequent public recognition through his speeches in Parliament.

Describing such claims as irritating, A Plus stated that they stem from a misunderstanding of what effective parliamentary representation truly involves. "What angers me is when people say, 'he doesn’t speak in Parliament because he can’t speak English'. They are misinformed, and I don’t blame them; I feel sorry for them," he expressed.

He argued that being vocal in Parliament should not be considered proof of effective representation, pointing out that some MPs may often interrupt proceedings without translating into meaningful benefits for their constituents. A Plus cited his children, who reside and were raised in London, as an example, noting that they sometimes find it difficult to comprehend the specific English used during parliamentary debates.

"The English spoken in Parliament is so foreign to me that when I show it to my kids, they say, ‘What are they saying?’ We have made it seem like simply being in the Parliamentary floor and shouting earns you the best MP," he lamented. A Plus clarified that he entered Parliament with a clear objective of delivering meaningful changes to Gomoa Central through his role, rather than seeking acclaim for his English-speaking abilities.

He stressed that he would rather be remembered for the positive impact he makes on the lives of his constituents than for the number of times he speaks during parliamentary sessions.
