North Korea launched a tactical missile into the East Sea on March 12th, marking its sixth such launch in a week. This move, coinciding with the upcoming U.S.-South Korean joint military exercise "Ulji Freedom Guardian," is interpreted as a political provocation as well as a military effort to enhance North Korea's missile capabilities.

The Joint Chiefs of Staff reported the launch, noting that the missile traveled over 700 kilometers and its precise range is under detailed analysis by South Korea and the United States. North Korea has long claimed that its monthly March and August drills are "war exercises" against an invasion. Notably, during the presidency of Yoon Suk-yeol, these drills have been accompanied by missile launches and other military responses.

An expert from the Seoul Institute suggests that North Korea initiated the missile launch before the official statement from the South Korean government, indicating the possibility of further actions during the joint exercise. The missile's range is significant enough to reach Japanese facilities in Shizuoka, raising concerns about its potential to reach targets within North Korea.

This launch, along with a similar one on March 6th, suggests a cycle of development, testing, and improvement for North Korea's missile technology. The Joint Chiefs of Staff emphasized that while the missile is classified as a "short-range" missile, its range of over 700 kilometers falls into the category of a medium-range missile (MRBM) or intermediate-range missile (IRBM), prompting further analysis of its capabilities.

The national security headquarters called for an emergency security assessment meeting, reiterating concerns over North Korea's continued missile launches, which they believe violate U.N. Security Council resolutions and demand immediate cessation.
