Ukraine Holds a Security Aid Meeting with Japan’s Ambassador Ahead of Winter

Japan's Ambassador to Ukraine, Masashi Nakagome, engaged in security aid discussions with senior Ukrainian officials this week as his diplomatic mission neared completion. Interior Minister Ivan Vyhivsky met with Nakagome on Thursday, August 13, commending Japan's contributions to joint projects and expressing hope for further cooperation in security and emergency response equipment.

Japan has previously provided Ukraine with technical equipment for border control, forensic laboratories, and specialized tools for humanitarian demining, as well as vehicles for Ukraine's Barrier-Free Driving Schools program. Additionally, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) delivered vehicles for public danger alerts, mobile workshops, and remote explosive-detection systems to Ukraine's State Emergency Service.

Secretary of Ukraine's National Security and Defense Council Ihor Klymenko also met with Nakagome to discuss Japan's potential involvement in the Drone Deal initiative and other areas such as unmanned and remote technologies, energy security, and infrastructure reconstruction. The security meetings come as Ukraine prepares for winter, with Russia likely to target Ukraine's power grid, potentially shifting focus to water supplies.

Ukraine and the EU signed a Drone Deal in July to bolster European security and bolster Ukraine's defense industry. Ukraine-Japan cooperation continues through the Emergency Recovery Programme, with Japan contributing $38.5 million and Ukraine receiving a $1.3 billion grant in April.
