Task-force upgrade call for major sports events

The DAB recently recommended upgrading Hong Kong's Major Sports Events Committee to a task force, aiming to facilitate more large-scale international sports events in the city. This proposal is part of the party's broader focus on sports industrialisation. Lawmaker Vincent Cheng argued that elevating the committee to a task force would enhance collaboration with various government bureaus, improving preparations for hosting mega sports events.

A task force would provide a more comprehensive overview of events, ensuring their success. Additionally, Cheng expressed hope that the task force could attract more international sports companies to Hong Kong, fostering investment in the city's sporting scene. The committee should also analyze data on economic benefits, participant numbers, and visitor ratios to develop detailed plans for tourist facilities and economic strategies at the district level.

Cheng suggested that the recently opened Kai Tak Sports Park should assume more responsibilities beyond merely being a venue provider, such as proactively attracting international sports companies and supporting young athletes in their careers. Lastly, the lawmaker proposed renovating older major sports venues like Kowloon and Victoria parks to meet current standards for hosting international events and hosting elite tournaments.
