Task-force upgrade call for major sports events

The DAB has proposed that the government upgrade its Major Sports Events Committee to better handle hosting large-scale international events in Hong Kong. The proposal is part of the party's focus on sports industrialization in their upcoming first five-year plan, which includes nearly 60 suggestions for consideration. Lawmaker Vincent Cheng believes upgrading the committee to the level of a task force could improve collaboration with various government bureaus, leading to better preparations for mega sports events.

He emphasized that this would give organizers a more comprehensive understanding of the events to be held. Cheng also hoped that the task force could attract more international sports companies to Hong Kong, fostering investment and promoting the city's stadiums, such as Kai Tak Stadium. In addition to granting the task force more coordinating power, Cheng suggested it could analyze data on economic benefits, participant numbers, and traveler ratios to create more comprehensive plans for tourist facilities and economic strategies at the district level.

He proposed that Kai Tak Sports Park, which opened in March 2025, take on additional roles beyond merely being a venue provider. For instance, the park's operator could actively attract international sports companies to set up operations in Hong Kong or support young athletes in pursuing sports careers. Cheng also advocated for renovating older major sports venues like Kowloon and Victoria parks to meet current standards for hosting international events, allowing them to serve as sites for elite tournaments in the city.
