She once struggled with school but is now a recipient of Singapore's highest youth development award

Solana Maria Mendoza, a 23-year-old from Singapore, once faced academic struggles and felt like she didn't belong. However, she remained a dedicated volunteer and was recently honored with the National Youth Achievement Award Gold. This is the second instalment of a series by CNA Women’s Gen Z, focusing on Mendoza's journey.

Mendoza struggled academically in her all-girls primary and secondary school, often feeling quiet and out of place. She studied hard but found academics challenging, and her reserved nature prevented her from asking for help. After her O-Level results, Mendoza initially aimed for journalism but settled for the Community Care and Social Services course at the Institute of Technical Education, as her academic performance fell short of junior college and polytechnic options.

In 2020, Mendoza entered ITE, feeling uncertain about her future. She discovered a passion for community and social work through her coursework and began volunteering. She volunteered at a charity supporting vulnerable women, children, and families, starting as an assistant and gradually taking on leadership roles. By helping children facing various challenges, Mendoza grew alongside them, learning how to be more vocal and confident.

Mendoza's volunteer work led her to Theris, where she volunteered with children with special needs, including those with cerebral palsy. She found the experience calming and therapeutic, and it further developed her leadership skills. In 2024 and 2025, Mendoza joined mission trips to Cambodia, teaching English and befriending children in a girls' home.

As a result of her extensive community service, Mendoza was awarded the National Youth Achievement Award (NYAA) Gold in 2025. This accolade, one of Singapore's highest youth development awards, recognizes her dedication to helping others and growing in leadership abilities.
