Punjab Assembly polls: BJP’s pro-Sikh strategy gives AAP scope for Hindu outreach

In preparation for the 2027 Punjab Assembly election, political parties are aligning their strategies. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), typically associated with Hindu voters, is emphasizing its pro-Sikh stance. Meanwhile, the Congress, the main opposition, is entangled in internal disputes. The ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is concentrating on engaging the Hindu electorate, a group it shares with the BJP and Congress.

Recently, the BJP named Kewal Singh Dhillon, a Jat Sikh, as its Punjab president. Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, frequently seen in turban at social and religious events, has been visiting Punjab for various functions. The party is bolstering its pro-Sikh image by highlighting Union government initiatives for the community, establishing an SIT to investigate 1984 anti-Sikh riots, launching the Kartarpur Corridor, and waiving GST on 'langar' (community kitchens).

These actions are seen as part of the BJP's plan to strengthen its 'pro-Sikh' image, potentially causing alienation among its core Hindu supporters. The AAP, sensing this opportunity, is aiming to capture this space.

Hindus make up approximately 38% of Punjab's electorate, traditionally supporting the Congress. The BJP's Hindu base is mainly urban. In 2026, the AAP implemented several initiatives to connect with the Hindu voters. At an Amritsar event, Arvind Kejriwal announced a Sita temple, organized devotional events, and staged a theatrical production depicting Lord Ram's ideals.

If the BJP shifts focus from its Hindu vote bank to Sikhs, Hindu voters might move away from the BJP. With the Congress battling internal conflicts and the BJP focused on building a pro-Sikh image, the AAP could gain ground among Hindu voters from both parties.
