Nurse on night duty found dead inside toilet at Kolkata’s NRS Hospital

On the evening of Wednesday, a 30-year-old nurse was discovered deceased inside a restroom at NRS Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, according to police reports. The nurse had reported for her night shift around 8 PM and proceeded to the staff restroom in the antenatal ward of the Gynaecology Department Building at approximately 10:20 PM.

After she failed to return, her colleagues ventured to check on her; they discovered the restroom door locked. Upon repeated attempts to gain entry proving unsuccessful, two colleagues broke open the door and found the nurse unconscious on the ground. An ambulance was called, and upon examination, the nurse was pronounced dead. The Kolkata Police were promptly notified, leading to the involvement of the Entally police station and the Detective Department's Homicide team.

Forensic analysis is underway to determine the cause of death, with speculation suggesting an overdose of an anaesthetic drug. No suicide note has been found, and the cause of death awaits confirmation from the post-mortem examination. The nurse, from Purba Medinipur district, had recently married in March and was residing with her husband in Dum Dum.

The state Health Minister, Sharadwat Mukherjee, inspected the hospital and pledged a dedicated investigation. The incident has sparked concerns over safety standards in West Bengal's medical facilities, reminiscent of a 2024 case where a trainee doctor was raped and murdered at RG Kar Hospital.
