North Korea Threatens ‘Stronger Deterrence’ Ahead of US-South Korea Drills

North Korea has denounced upcoming joint military drills by the United States and South Korea, warning it could counter with stronger deterrence measures. The 11-day exercises, set to commence on Monday, are a standard part of the summer schedule, aimed at preparing the US and South Korea to defend against the nuclear-armed North.

Pyongyang regards these exercises as rehearsals for an invasion. Recently, North Korea fired a ballistic missile over the Sea of Japan, expressing its disapproval of the drills. The North's Foreign Ministry spokesperson stated that the country's principle of security is to respond to escalating threats with heightened deterrent capabilities.

This stance emphasizes North Korea's refusal to tolerate the confrontational atmosphere created by the hostile states and its commitment to express its position firmly to address any threats and challenges through responsible and decisive actions in self-defense. The drills, known as "Ulchi Freedom Shield," will see participation from 18,000 South Korean troops and their counterparts from the 28,500-strong US contingent stationed in the country.

North Korea's active involvement in international conflicts, particularly its backing of Russia in its invasion of Ukraine, suggests that its troops have gained valuable experience in modern warfare scenarios.
