N. Korea warns of stronger response to US-South drills

North Korea has expressed its disapproval of upcoming joint military drills between the United States and South Korea, warning that it could respond with stronger deterrent measures. The 11-day exercises, set to commence on Monday, are a recurring summer event aimed at preparing the US and South Korea to defend against the nuclear-armed North. Pyongyang regards these drills as rehearsals for an invasion and recently launched a ballistic missile over the Sea of Japan, signaling its opposition to the exercises.

According to a statement from North Korea's Foreign Ministry, released on Friday, responding to an increased threat level requires a proportionate escalation in deterrence. The statement emphasized that Pyongyang will not tolerate the hostile situation being instigated by enemy states and will assert its stance through responsible and decisive use of the right to legitimate self-defense.

The official described the drills as aimed at finalizing preparations for substantial military confrontation with the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (North Korea), implying that these exercises may be a rehearsal for an aggressive war. This assertion suggests that the US-South Korea Ulchi Freedom Shield drills, involving 18,000 South Korean troops and 28,500 US personnel, are viewed as a rehearsal for an aggressive conflict.

North Korea's engagement in international conflicts has intensified recently, with the country providing crucial support to Russia in its invasion of Ukraine. The military exercises are expected to prepare soldiers for a potential confrontation against North Korean troops, who have gained valuable experience fighting alongside Russian forces in Ukraine.
