Niedrigwasser: Wassermangel bedroht die Wildtierwelt

Germany's wildlife is facing a severe threat from extreme drought and heat this summer, according to the German Wildlife Protection Society. The lack of water is causing danger for animals, with Paulina Kuhn, a wildlife expert, warning that they could dry up or suffocate. Small animals like squirrels, deer, and hares are especially vulnerable as they can't cover long distances to find water and cool down.

Young animals are at risk too, unable to travel far for water sources. Fish and other aquatic creatures are also affected by rising water temperatures in reservoirs. Food scarcity is another issue, as worms and insects retreat deeper into the soil. Wildlife management is urgently needed, emphasized Lutz Kaczmarsch, a representative from North Rhine-Westphalia's Land Animal Protection Association.

No one is taking responsibility or willing to bear the costs for rescue measures yet. Vermin and insects also retreat deeper in the ground, making it harder for animals to find food. The Wildlife Protection Society urges the establishment of shallow water basins in shaded spots for animals to drink from, cleaned and refilled daily.

Stones or branches in the basin help provide water for insects. Affected fish should be reported to authorities like the Water Management Office or fishing clubs. Young birds that jump out of overheated nests can be reported to wildlife rescue stations.
