Nakashima holds off Jodar to book first ATP Masters final in Montreal

Brandon Nakashima, representing the United States, triumphed over Rafael Jodar of Spain in a close 7-6 (7/3), 6-4 singles semifinal at the ATP 1000 National Bank Open in Montreal on Wednesday. This victory secures Nakashima's place in his first ATP Masters final in the Canadian city, where the final will be an all-American showdown. Nakashima will face the winner of the second semifinal match between defending champion Ben Shelton and fellow American Lerner Tien.

The US player needed two hours, including 66 minutes in the second set, to overcome Jodar. The Spanish teenager, who was a finalist in Washington this month and expected to soon break into the top 10 rankings, saved four match points before his opponent finally secured the win with an ace on his fifth opportunity. The final game lasted over 10 minutes, featuring six deuces and was described by Nakashima as "crazy" and "super-tight". Both players were pushing hard to secure the win.

Nakashima, 25, expressed his happiness with his performance, attributing his success to hitting his shots on serve and trusting his forehand. He stated that when he connects with his forehand, it is one of his best shots. Nakashima will play in his fifth final of his career, which is his most prestigious match to date, as he has never before competed in a title match above the 250-level.
