North Korea warns of new ‘deterrent’ ahead of US-South drills

SEOUL: North Korea has condemned upcoming joint military exercises between the United States and South Korea, warning that it may respond with more aggressive deterrent measures. The 11-day drills, set to commence on Monday, are a recurring part of the summer schedule designed to prepare both nations for a potential defense against the nuclear-armed North.

Pyongyang accuses the joint exercises of rehearsing for an invasion. In a statement posted by the state news agency KCNA, North Korea's foreign ministry spokesperson emphasized the country's commitment to ensuring security by responding to new threats with stronger deterrence. The foreign ministry stated that Pyongyang will not accept the escalating confrontational situation created by external states, and it will clearly express its stance against any threats through a responsible and decisive exercise of its right to self-defense.

The statement characterized the drills as preparations for a significant military confrontation with the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, implying that the joint exercises are a rehearsal for an aggressive war. The US-South Korea Ulchi Freedom Shield drills will involve 18,000 South Korean troops and 28,500 US personnel stationed in the country.

North Korea has increasingly played a more prominent role in international conflicts, notably providing crucial support to Russia during its invasion of Ukraine. A spokesperson noted that the drills will prepare soldiers for potential battles against North Korean troops, who have gained valuable experience fighting alongside Russian forces in Ukraine.
