Meth, heroin and cannabis worth RM18,500 found inside a Lumut police cell, and a cop's in trouble too

IPOH, Aug 13 — A police constable and two men were arrested after a significant cache of drugs was discovered inside the Lumut police station's lock-up in Manjung. Perak police chief Datuk Mohd Alwi Zainal Abidin revealed that the drugs were confiscated during an inspection of the lock-up on Tuesday morning. Among the seized substances were 16 small plastic tubes containing 109 grams of methamphetamine, 16 plastic tubes with 110 grams of heroin, and 23 tubes holding 142 grams of dried cannabis leaves.

Following the seizure, two suspects in their 40s, who were allegedly involved in drug-related activities, were charged. Additionally, a police officer in his 30s, who was stationed at the location, was arrested to aid the investigation. At a press conference, Mohd Alwi disclosed that the two drug suspects tested positive for drug use, and all three individuals were remanded for seven days, from August 12 to 18.

Police are also probing the method used to smuggle the drugs into the lock-up. The authorities emphasize the gravity of drug abuse and trafficking, regardless of whether the individuals involved are within police premises or its surrounding areas. They promise a transparent and thorough investigation to ascertain the appropriate course of action based on the evidence gathered.

The case is being investigated under Sections 39B and 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952. Offenders convicted under Section 39B could face the death penalty or life imprisonment with at least 12 strokes of the cane, while those found guilty under Section 15(1)(a) may be fined up to RM5,000, sentenced to up to two years in prison, or both.
