Meth, heroin and cannabis worth RM18,500 found inside a Lumut police cell, and a cop's in trouble too

IPOH, Aug 13 — Three individuals, comprising a police constable, were apprehended after authorities discovered illicit substances valued at RM18,534 within the Lumut police station lock-up in Manjung. Perak police chief Datuk Mohd Alwi Zainal Abidin revealed that the drugs were uncovered during an inspection of the lock-up on Tuesday morning.

The haul comprised 16 tiny plastic tubes containing 109 grams of methamphetamine, 16 plastic tubes housing 110 grams of heroin, and 23 tubes with 142 grams of dried cannabis leaves. "Upon seizing the contraband, we arrested two suspects in their forties, who are expected to face charges for drug-related offenses," Mohd Alwi stated at a press conference at the Perak police headquarters.

"Additionally, we apprehended the policeman, in his thirties, who is assigned to the facility, to aid the ongoing investigation." Both the drug suspects tested positive for drug use, and all three individuals have been held in custody for seven days, from August 12 to 18. Mohd Alwi disclosed that investigators are probing the method used to smuggle the drugs into the lock-up.

He emphasized that drug abuse and trafficking, including cases involving individuals within police premises or neighboring areas, are taken seriously by law enforcement. The case is being examined under Section 39B and Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952. Convictions under Section 39B carry the death penalty or life imprisonment with at least 12 strokes of the cane, while those found guilty under Section 15(1)(a) face up to two years in prison or a fine of RM5,000.
