Mahama sets 24-month deadline for completion of Upper East Regional Airport

President John Dramani Mahama has declared that the Upper East Regional Airport project, slated for completion within 24 months of construction start, will be finished ahead of schedule. The President disclosed this during an on-site visit to the airport site on August 13, 2026. The airport project has moved from the procurement stage to the construction phase, with government officials striving to finalize the process to commence construction before year-end.

The Upper East Airport is one of three new airports planned by the government to improve air connectivity across Ghana, alongside new airports in Wa and Sunyani. Mahama has been closely monitoring the procurement process and urged relevant authorities to expedite their work to ensure timely commencement of construction. Despite the contractual completion period being 24 months, the contractors have assured the government that they can complete the project earlier.

Mahama expressed confidence that the project would be officially launched before the year-end, and plans to return to the region for the sod-cutting ceremony alongside traditional leaders and residents to formally kick start the project. The new airport is anticipated to enhance air transportation in the Upper East Region, boosting economic activity and development in the area.
