Construction of Bolgatanga Airport to begin by end of 2026 – Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has announced that construction of the proposed Bolgatanga Airport will commence by the end of 2026, following the successful completion of the ongoing procurement process. The Ghana Airports Company Limited, the board chairman and Member of Parliament for Builsa North, James Agalga, confirmed that the company is actively working to secure all necessary approvals by October. This would allow President Mahama to return and officially inaugurate the airport.

The Bolgatanga Airport is expected to be fully operational in 24 months after construction begins, although the contractor has suggested the project could be completed ahead of schedule. The airport will initially handle around 100,000 passengers annually and is designed with future expansion in mind. It will be built on approximately 4,000 acres of land generously donated by traditional authorities.

The airport will boast a 2.2-kilometer runway, aircraft apron, air traffic control tower, night-operation lighting, rescue and firefighting facilities, and a five-kilometer asphalted access road. President Mahama emphasized that the project is part of the government's commitment to enhancing air connectivity throughout the country.

He also mentioned that airports are planned for Wa and Sunyani, describing the Bolgatanga Airport as a crucial enabler of economic activity and a potential game-changer for the Upper East Region.
