Lessons from Covid steered NYU Abu Dhabi through war, says new vice chancellor

New York University Abu Dhabi vice chancellor Fabio Piano shared insights on how the institution managed through challenges, particularly the Iran war in March. The university swiftly adapted, maintaining transparency and stability through open communication. Piano emphasized the importance of teamwork and a light-hearted approach in leadership, stating that such qualities help alleviate the weight of complex situations.

After the initial shock, students and staff responded maturely, following directives and maintaining a strong sense of community.

As the term concluded with an in-person graduation, operations largely returned to normal. To further prepare for potential future disruptions, security measures were reinforced, and additional drills were conducted. Direct communication with the government was also increased to ensure preparedness. Students are expected to return to campus before classes start at the end of the month, with campus life being particularly valued due to extensive programming and activities planned to enhance the experience.

Piano highlighted the potential of artificial intelligence in education, particularly in fields like biology. He believes AI can democratize education and personalise learning, potentially impacting cognitive development positively. The university, which currently has 26% Emirati students, is expanding its graduate programmes and research focus to further contribute to the UAE. Piano sees the university's mission as aligned with the UAE's, aiming to benefit Abu Dhabi directly through its research offerings.
