Kgomotso Moeketsi fights back: Crowdfunding campaign against SABC dismissal

Former SAfm presenter Kgomotso Moeketsi, known as "KG," has initiated a BackaBuddy crowdfunding campaign to raise around R250,000. The funds will support her legal battle against the SABC, which dismissed her without a proper process. Moeketsi alleges the public broadcaster acted unfairly and is seeking accountability rather than reinstatement. She stated, "I was unfairly dismissed without any due process. Help me take this public organization to court."

The SABC confirmed, on July 15, that Moeketsi's contract had been terminated following an internal process. A spokesperson, Mmoni Ngubane, told IOL that Moeketsi could appeal the decision but the broadcaster would not comment further. According to Moeketsi, tensions arose after Ferdinand Mabalane, the new programme manager, introduced her in March 2026.

Allegedly, Mabalane linked her to his departure from Kaya FM in the early 2000s. Despite her dispute with this account, tensions escalated after a May 30 incident involving a listener's complaint about her response to a song request. Following this, her programme experienced a major technical failure, and she was suspended shortly after.

Moeketsi claims she was not given clear information about additional allegations being investigated, despite submitting an appeal within the required timeframe. She argues her termination breached the terms of her contract, which began on April 1, 2026. She demands accountability and an independent assessment of whether her contract was respected and whether her dismissal was fair.

Moeketsi, marking 30 years in radio, seeks the funds to pursue the case in the High Court, stating the matter is also about the rights of freelancers and independent contractors.
