Deliveryman gets 40 years for killing wife

On July 9, 2022, deliveryman Wan Kwong Loon, 48, was found guilty of murdering his 45-year-old wife, Loke Wai Fan, at their home in Serdang. The High Court in Shah Alam sentenced him to 40 years in prison for the crime, which came to light when her remains were discovered in a river in Temerloh four days later. Justice Roszianayati Ahmad ruled that Loon failed to present any reasonable doubt to the prosecution's case, which was backed by substantial circumstantial evidence.

The court also ordered Loon to receive 15 strokes of the rotan, or bamboo cane, as a form of corporal punishment.

The judge noted that Loon and his deceased wife had a strained relationship, as he was unhappy with her work as a part-time pub waitress. Loon attempted to conceal evidence of Loke's mobile phone, MyKad, and driving license being hidden in the ceiling of their home, yet filed a police report claiming she was "uncontactable." CCTV footage from a toll booth confirmed Loon's travel to Temerloh between the time his wife was reported missing and the discovery of her remains.

Although the court avoided imposing the death penalty due to the circumstances not meeting the "rarest of rare" criteria, it emphasized that a life had been lost and a mother separated from her children forever. The judge stated that a custodial sentence serves as a deterrent. Loon's legal representatives included lawyer Mak Kah Keong, while deputy public prosecutor Ahmad Zuhaini Mahamad Amin handled the prosecution case. An appeal has been filed against the judgment.
