Karachi Water and Sewerage Charges Increased

The Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC) has raised water and sewerage charges by 7.05% for residents and businesses, adding to the financial strain of a city grappling with insufficient water supply. The Sindh government announced the 7.05% increase in the official Gazette on August 10, 2026, following approval by the KWSC Board of Directors for revised tariffs.

The corporation cited the average Consumer Price Index for the revision. This marks the second major tariff increase in two years, with the first occurring in September 2024 when charges rose by approximately 23%. Initially, sewerage charges were set at 9% of water charges. Now, KWSC will calculate charges for residential properties based on plot size, while commercial establishments and shops will face fixed monthly rates.

The price hike has sparked complaints from residents who often depend on private water tankers, as the KWSC fails to provide adequate piped water in many areas. KWSC officials argue that the higher tariffs will bolster the corporation's revenue, ensuring sustainable funding for water supply, sewerage operations, maintenance, and rehabilitation.
