IYD: Ogun youths seek stronger inclusion, appeal for youth ministry

On the occasion of International Youth Day in 2026, young leaders from Ogun State have been advocating for increased integration and better collaboration with the government to boost youth development in the region. At a recent townhall meeting held at the June 12 Cultural Centre in Abeokuta, a member of the Nigerian Youth Parliament, Olukoyejo Morenikeji, called for the establishment of a separate Ministry of Youth Development.

This proposal comes as the state approaches a period of political transition. Morenikeji emphasized that Ogun State, which hosts many universities, should utilize its youthful population more effectively, particularly in creative and artisanal fields. He also suggested reviewing appointments related to youth matters to ensure they reflect the actual age range of 18 to 35 years.

State Senator Iyanuoluwa Sonde-Ikokoh, representing Ogun Central Senatorial District, echoed the need for youth involvement in policy-making, stating that young people should be at the forefront of discussions about decisions that impact their lives. Toheeb Bisiriyu, a Tracka Officer in Ogun State, urged young people to participate more actively in governance, suggesting that information on public spending and policy is available to anyone interested in the country's progress.
