Huanggang port drill smooth: Chris Tang

On Thursday, roughly 1,000 civil servants took part in a comprehensive stress test at Hong Kong's new Huanggang port public transport interchange, marking the first large-scale drill conducted at the facility. Over 20 government departments sent representatives who utilized various public transport options such as buses, cross-border coaches, minibuses, and taxis to navigate the interchange.

They proceeded through both the departure and arrival halls of the port building, culminating in their return via public transportation. This process was repeated multiple times to mimic pedestrian and vehicle traffic, resulting in more than 120 vehicle trips.

Secretary for Security Chris Tang hailed the drill as a resounding success and meticulously organized, according to a government statement. He emphasized that the drill encompassed aspects such as passenger boarding and alighting, pedestrian and vehicle traffic management, terminal passageway capacity, signage clarity, and accessibility features for individuals with disabilities. Additionally, there were simulations involving passengers boarding and disembarking from taxis, buses, and minibuses simultaneously.

Tang also revealed that some participants raised concerns about unclear signage and queue management. He assured that officials would acknowledge this feedback and take necessary steps for improvement. Furthermore, Tang mentioned that stress tests would continue at the border checkpoint almost daily to guarantee the safe and efficient operations of the port upon its official opening to the public.

Secretary for Transport and Logistics Mable Chan was present to oversee the drill. She stated that her bureau would meticulously review and enhance the transport arrangements to ensure a highly efficient transport network once the port commences operations.
