Ofankor barrier accident: Families searching for relatives referred to police

The death toll from a tragic accident at the Ofankor Barrier on the Accra-Kumasi Highway has increased to 11, with 13 others critically injured and receiving medical attention. DO1 Emmanuel Bonney, the Head of Public Relations at the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), provided the latest figures to Adom News at the scene. He also revealed that three families have sought assistance from the GNFS in finding relatives potentially involved in the crash. These families have been directed to the police for help in identifying their loved ones.

According to DO1 Bonney, the accident unfolded when an "oboboyaa" was struck by a tipper truck, causing a police vehicle to stop and direct oncoming traffic. Subsequently, a Sprinter bus with passengers on board came to a halt at the scene when another tipper truck loaded with sand collided with it. This chain of events led to multiple fatalities and left several passengers with critical injuries. Investigations are underway to determine the exact circumstances of the accident.

Dennis Quarshie, the Assembly Member for the Ofankor South Electoral Area, expressed concern over the frequent accidents occurring at the location, affecting both lanes of the highway. He pointed to high speeds of motorists as a contributing factor and called for urgent measures to enhance safety at the site. The Mayor of Accra, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, has assured residents and road users that steps will be taken to prevent similar incidents in the future.
