Families feel the pinch of higher children’s shoe prices as kids head back to school

Families are feeling the financial strain as the cost of children's footwear surges ahead of the back-to-school season, according to experts and retailers. As children grow quickly and shoes are typically pricier, parents are increasingly spending extra time hunting for deals or settling for fewer pairs, while many are simply declining to purchase more expensive items.

In the first half of this year, shoe prices rose by 3.2%, with analysts predicting this trend may continue into the full year at the quickest rate in 34 years since the economic downturns of 2021 and 2022, according to the Footwear Distributors and Retailers Association. For example, Jonah Seidenberg, a 12-year-old from Northbrook, Illinois, and his mother spent an entire night scouring online platforms for discounted sneakers, ultimately settling on a $145 pair on Dick's Sporting Goods' website.

Despite Jonah's enthusiasm for a futuristic-looking Nike Mind shoe designed to enhance concentration, the high price prompted him to contribute $40 of his own money. Parental sentiments echo this situation, with some expressing frustration over the persistent price increases while believing shoe quality has diminished.
