Families feel the pinch of higher children’s shoe prices as kids head back to school

As kids prepare to return to school, families are grappling with the rising cost of children's footwear. The price of new shoes is on track to increase at the fastest rate in 34 years, according to the Footwear Distributors and Retailers Association, with full-year prices projected to rise by 3.2% in the first half of the year. This trend is straining family budgets that are already being pressured by higher costs for food, gas, and other essentials.

Parents are finding it challenging to balance the need for stylish and well-fitting shoes with budget constraints. Jonah Seidenberg, a 12-year-old from Chicago, had his heart set on a futuristic-looking sneaker called Nike Minds, which claims to improve concentration by stimulating the soles of the feet. Despite finding a discounted pair online, the full price of $145 was more than his family budgeted, so Jonah contributed $40 of his own money.

Experts warn that children's feet grow rapidly, often outgrowing shoes within six to nine months for kids aged 7 to 10 and annually for teens. This fast turnover, combined with high prices, forces parents to make difficult choices between buying new shoes and other necessities. Some parents, like Elizabeth Powers, have set a budget of a few hundred dollars per child for the year and are seeking coupons and versatile shoes to stretch their funds.

The pressure to wear the right sneaker brands is particularly strong for kids, who view shoes as a key indicator of social status. Parents like Priya Parthasarathy, a podiatrist and spokesperson for the American Podiatric Medical Association, emphasize the importance of proper-fitting shoes for children's foot health, noting that ill-fitting footwear can lead to bullying or prevent kids from participating in sports or attending school.
