Ending double-track system will improve SHS students’ performance – Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has revealed that the government’s plan to eliminate the double-track system in Senior High Schools (SHSs) will enhance academic performance by increasing the time teachers can spend with students. The double-track arrangement has severely limited the opportunities for teachers to interact with students, negatively impacting the quality of education and ultimately, students’ readiness for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

Addressing the media on August 13, 2026, during his maiden tour of the Upper East Region, Mahama explained that ending the double-track system would enable more classroom time for both students and teachers. He expressed the belief that this change would lead to improved WAEC exam results. The President set 2027 as the deadline for completing the transition to a single-track system.

However, he noted that meeting this target hinges on expanding school infrastructure to accommodate all students under the single-track model. As such, the government will continue investing in more classrooms and facilities to create the necessary capacity for this system change.
