South Korea is hesitant about arming Ukraine amid growing military ties with North Korea. Ukraine's President has requested weapons and air defense systems from Seoul, but Seoul must consider its own survival. North Korean forces are present in Russia and supply the country with weapons. This could benefit North Korea by providing combat experience, military know-how, and advanced Russian technology.

South Korea's restraint isn't indifference to Ukraine, but a careful assessment of its own security. While Seoul has the capability to contribute meaningfully, supplying lethal weapons would place South Korean military capabilities directly into an active war against Russia. This would risk Seoul becoming a direct participant in the conflict, potentially escalating tensions on the Korean Peninsula.

South Korea could still provide humanitarian assistance, support reconstruction, and work with allies to uphold international law. The timing of this decision is crucial as South Korea and the United States prepare for a major military exercise. The exercise tests combined readiness and requires strategic focus on the peninsula's threats, not opening another military front.

North Korea's cooperation with Russia could alter the peninsula's balance, making Seoul's restraint even more important. The lesson from Ukraine is that wars have consequences beyond their original battlefields. South Korea should support Ukraine but also safeguard itself. Humanitarian solidarity doesn't necessitate military intervention.

Refusing to cross this line isn't abandoning an ally; it's fulfilling South Korea's responsibility to its citizens.
