College student rescues three drowning girls from Lake Washington

On July 31, college student Lillie Vehling was lounging near Lake Washington in Seattle, engrossed in a book and waiting for the U.S. Navy Blue Angels air show to commence during the Seafair weekend. While reading by the lake, Vehling noticed three young girls struggling to stay afloat beyond the buoy line. The incident was later reported by KOMO News, highlighting how an ordinary afternoon turned into a life-saving rescue.

Vehling, who had previously served as a lifeguard and played water polo at the University of California, Davis, immediately dove into the lake to rescue the girls. The rescue required careful attention, as the three girls were struggling together, with the third girl found unconscious and entangled in buoy ropes. Vehling, with her lifeguard experience, rescued each girl one by one, bringing them to safety.
