Collapsed Plateau mining pit claims seven lives

A mining pit collapse in Kassa community, Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State claimed the lives of seven miners on Wednesday evening. The incident occurred around 7pm while the miners were actively working at the site. Trapped underground, the victims prompted a frantic rescue effort by residents and fellow miners.

The collapse triggered panic in the community, with residents rushing to the mining site following the disaster. Gunmen, meanwhile, attacked four Plateau communities, killing two people and torching houses. Seven miners perished in the pit collapse, according to the Berom Youth Moulders-Association's publicity secretary, Rwang Tengwong.

Efforts were made to rescue the miners, but they were found dead. Community members expressed heartbreak over the loss of young men who went to work to support their families. They criticized the lack of safety measures and called for government intervention to enforce stricter mining safety regulations.
