[사설] 5·18 왜곡 세력 국회 부른 이진숙, 엄중히 책임 물어야

On May 13th, National Strength Party legislator Lee Bong-soo summoned a series of right-wing New Light figures to the National Assembly despite opposition, announcing a special forum to "thoroughly discuss" the 5·18 incident. However, the forum fell short of expectations, as attendees disregarded the constitutional provisions of the 5·18 spirit and resorted to vile rhetoric, unafraid to label the late Chun Doo-hwan as a savior of the nation and a leader of democracy.

Legislative economist and co-chair of the New History National Movement, Lee Eun-hun, criticized these assertions, stating that the historical narrative of South Korea began with President Syngman Rhee, the authoritarian regimes of Park Chung-hee and Chun Doo-hwan, and culminated in the democratic transition. These leaders did not "steal" democracy but "abandoned" it, and the uprisings of April 19th, October 26th, and 5·18 were "mere coups due to political and intellectual limitations," not acts of historical resistance.

The commentator further denounced the glorification of 5·18 and the revisionist history, noting that while some language may have softened in the past, the current portrayal of 5·18 remains a despicable attempt to undermine the nation's constitutional values.
