Zelensky teases joint plan with allies to force Putin to stop war

On August 12, President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine announced a joint plan with allies aimed at compelling Russia to cease its ongoing military conflict. Despite peace negotiations remaining inconclusive, Russia persists in launching assaults on Ukrainian cities. During a speech at the Ukrainian Youth Forum, Zelensky affirmed the existence of such a strategy, emphasizing that it hinges on exerting collective pressure on Russian President Vladimir Putin, though he refrained from divulging further specifics.

Zelensky also highlighted the critical importance of Ukrainian forces maintaining their defensive positions and continuing offensive operations within Russian territory. Simultaneously, he stressed the necessity for Ukraine's allies to enhance the nation's air defense capabilities. Earlier that day, on August 11, Zelensky conveyed to the U.S. that Ukrainian negotiators had forwarded their proposals for ending the war.

However, ongoing peace discussions have been impeded for months due to significant disagreements between Kyiv and Moscow over territorial matters. Russia has consistently refused Ukraine's request for a ceasefire along the present frontline and has demanded sovereignty over the entire Donbas region in eastern Ukraine—a demand that Ukraine deems unfeasible.

Despite these obstacles, Ukraine remains optimistic that the active phase of the war could conclude prior to the winter season, which would likely see a resurgence in strikes targeting Ukraine's energy infrastructure. Ukraine has been grappling with critical shortages in air defense systems, particularly PAC-3 Patriot interceptors, which are crucial for neutralizing Russian ballistic missiles regularly targeting Ukrainian cities like Kyiv.

In a subsequent statement, Zelensky warned that Putin is anticipated to initiate another round of conscription to bolster his invasion forces, potentially following the Russian legislative elections in September.
